Opportunity Cost
Everything comes with a price. When you decide on one thing you forgo all other possibilities.
It's a complicated situation and I do have justification for not doing well in school.
There is usually a correlation between people who do a lot and not doing well in school. The logic works only one way though.
Someone doing bad in college does not necessarily mean they do a lot. But people who do a lot usually do bad at college. At least from what I've seen.
The smartest people I've met in college seem to be two types: the ultra study type, and the one who doesn't even show up to class.
It comes down to one fundamental problem: opportunity cost. Everything comes with a price and when you decide on one thing you forgo all other possibilities.
Even something as simple as watching a two hour movie can carry with it a tremendous cost. For example, those two hours could have been spent socializing at an event where you could have networked and happened to find a new job because of it. Those two hours could have been spent reading a book and gaining a new revelation. Could have been spent exercising, earning money, exploring the world, trying new things, etc.. Hell, even sleeping two hours may have been a better decision.
So, for example, me writing this article is time not spent studying or preparing for my accounting midterm today.
While I enjoy accounting and do think it is useful in some aspects, however, I believe creating and putting my thoughts out there like this will have a greater bearing and impact on my future in the long run.
No one will remember my low grades, but people will remember these articles. These videos, these podcasts, etc.
I want the things that I do to have weight on my future. Ideally, everything that I do should be contributing towards the greater aim, my grand goal in life. Otherwise, what am I doing?
Not putting a foot forwards is putting a foot backwards. Simply because inaction is still action, a conscious choice to do no good. When you aren't doing something you are still doing something, just that it's nothing. Understand?
Anyways, that is my spiel today. I have just minutes now to prepare for my accounting exam. See you next time.
