I've had my first good night of sleep in weeks and I know why
I identified lack of sleep as a key-stone habit causing all my bad behaviors and thinking. Reframing discipline as a form of self-love and as a gift, I set up new healthy boundaries to keep myself successful in the long-term.
I cut off social media before bed
At 8pm, all social media apps on my phone are blocked.
This gives my brain a few hours to slow down and process everything that has happened during the day. Also, it allows me a brief moment of not being pulled in twenty different directions (of not being constantly stressed and distracted.)
Now, by the time I go to sleep, my brain is calm and no longer stressing about messages of other people.
This is a form of self-love and discipline
I realized in order to maintain high-performance in the long-term, I need a healthy and sustainable system.
Cutting off social media like this doesn't feel like a chore or punishment, but rather it feels like a gift.
It feels like I give myself permission to relax after a long day of work, to do nothing and to wind down before bed. It feels like a reward.
I think that is what discipline should be - setting up healthy boundaries that are beneficial towards your goals and view it from a framing of self-love and commitment.
Discipline shouldn't be framed as self-mutilation and whiping yourself into obedience.
Why frame it like this?
The objective act of being discipline does not change - but your narrative about it does.
So just pick a good narrative and live happily.
Sleep for me is the leading cause of all my bad behavior.
All of my slacking-off, bad habits, unhappy mood, rude behavior, destructive thoughts, and more - are directly influenced by the amount of sleep I have been getting recently.
If I lose hope and faith in my vision and dreams - that is from deep tiredness, not because I actually lost faith.
That is why it is so important for me to address this issue. It is a key-stone habit. Meaning that if this one issue is resolved, then all other issues linked to it will be resolved too.
That is the power of key-stone habits, and that is why it is important to identify and address them timely and properly.
Have a wonderful day everyone.
Love you,
Jacob Pugmire
